What the qualification is

The Higher Certificate in Paralegal Studies is an entry‑level legal qualification that equips you to work as a paralegal / legal assistant in law firms, corporate legal departments, financial institutions, and parts of the public sector. It focuses on practical legal skills (like legal research, client communication, and office support) so you can contribute meaningfully from day one.

What you’ll learn

By the end of the certificate, you should be able to: 

• Do legal research and help a lawyer or paralegal practitioner prepare case documents and advice.
• Communicate professionally with clients and colleagues in a legal office (written and verbal).
• Guide and refer clients appropriately (for example, to the right office or service), and assist with problem‑solving in typical paralegal tasks.
• Handle legal admin: organise files, manage deadlines, and support daily office processes ethically and effectively.

How study & assessment works

• Mode of delivery: Online learning, so you can study from home with structured support.
• Typical duration: 1 academic year (full‑time pace).
• Assessments: For each subject, you submit one assignment (formative) and write a final exam (summative). The exam counts 40% toward the subject’s final mark, and there are two exam opportunities in the study year, with defined supplementary rules.

Entry requirements (who can apply)

You can apply if you have one of the following:

• NSC (matric) with Higher Certificate endorsement; or
• NC(V) Level 4 with Higher Certificate endorsement; or
• ASC/SC (with HC endorsement or university exemption); or
• A foreign school‑leaving certificate that meets the Matriculation Board’s equivalence rules.
• Lyceum may also consider mature age entry and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)/Credit Accumulation and Transfer (CAT) under CHE policy.

Graduates can work as paralegal assistants, legal office coordinators, law clerks, or in admin roles within law firms, municipalities, law enforcement agencies, banks, credit bureaus, and private companies.
